the summer vacation is over...(very short summary)

I have not opened this blogger site for about one month...
Now, I would like to write about my summer vacation.
First, I felt this summer vacation was so short because I spent over one month in Canada.
I stayed in Canada from Jul.6 to Aug. 17. I studied English almost every day, and I talked a lot with people in Victoria and my friends. I was very happy when I could make my friends from foreign countries. I made a promise with my friends from Taiwan to meet in Taipei. I am looking forward to seeing them!!!!! Anyway, this studying abroad was best, the most special memory ever. I wanna say thank you to everyone who helped me.
After I came back to Japan, I went Kamikochi, and hiked Mt.kitahodakadake. There were so many rocky stretches. Thus, my knees had pains. However, I forgot these pains when I completed hiking and I could stand the top of this mountain. My condition was absolutely not well, but I enjoyed.
This summer vacation motivated me to study more in the autumn term. Keep going!!!

What Makes the Essay Strong?

I was lost making sentences to close my essay.
BUT I was amazed by Dan's lecture.
The conclusion paragraph is almost the summary of body paragraphs!!!!!
When I read Omiai essay, I could understand what I should write as the conclusion.
I want to rewrite the conclusion paragraph and make it strong!!!

Also, I thought that sufficient research is very important in developing the essay.
If the essay has lack of the evidence, it will not be good, wonderful, and beautiful.
Now, I was pointed out in the e-portfolio that my essay is lack of evidence or reason.
Similarly, the connection between the first sentence and the last sentence in each paragraph is very very important. I believe that the essay would be well-developed if there is a good connection between these two sentences at least.
Less than one week is left, so I will work hard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Reaction to the OMS article...

As one of the themes in OMS, there is the theme, "There is Honor in Struggle, Defeat & Death". Santiago was struggling against defeat.
He could not catch fish for eighty-four days, but he never gave up though he is old.
Also, he was struggling with Marlin for three days.
I think he is a strong person.
I also thought that the nature is severe world.
Everything is not always going well.
Marlin remained only skeleton, Santiago and Marlin were the token of honor, brave of fighting with the shark.
I thought Santiago had a gender opinion, "Man is not made for defeat", however I felt his thought was powerful and fantastic!

the essence of presentation, 3Bs

I learned how to show the introduction of the book as a presentation.
the presentation that Dan showed was so clear. I am not good at this skill, so I will work hard!!!
3Bs
Background
Biography
Bias

In fact, I am hard to read OMS, because I read without thinking anything, just read, read, and read...
I want to look into about the author more, and read OMS with reminding of 3Bs so that I will be able to understand OMS clearer.

the life of Hemingway

At first, I thought Hemingway was one of the greatest authors in the world. However, the article told me that he was not the greatest American writer. He created the preposterous and romantic literary myth. He was also an uncompromising, soulful artist.
he was not respected by the generations of writers, but they try to emulate him.
Most readers named excellent work than Hemingway’s, so he was not the greatest author.
However, after being published one of Hemingway’s most highly regarded novels, the short masterpiece, The Old Man and the Sea, his name was spread and remained the single most influential, most parodied, most prominent, most immense American author of the past 100 years.
I think Hemingway’s achievements were so great. Especially, The Old Man and the Sea was based on his character and experience. I want to read OMS deeply and his other novels.

Stoicism is the main theme of OMS. I am not good at understanding philosophy, but I understood this word by connecting stoic. Santiago could not fish for 84 days, but he did not give up though he was an old man. I think the component of stoicism is including this part.
I want to practice stoicism because I HAVE NOT FINISHED HOMEWORK YET.
I will work hard this week...

C W T

I have not time to review fallacies perfectly. Even now, however, I cannot make sense of Hasty generalization, Post hoc and Begging the question. I assumed that I could understand all of the general concepts.
Hasty generalization means that it has no sufficient evidence and always includes one's bias, stereotype and experiences.
Post hoc means that sentences that seem related as cause and event are not really related, so it is not logical.
Begging the question means that it hides assumption,  so there is no main point in the essay.

Am I OK??????
If I am wrong, please comment, please!!!

There are so many fallacies...

I wrote about the class in May 28th,
In the class, I learned there is the another way to collect the information of the essay, that is survey!
My essay does not need to survey now, but I want to use the survey as the method of looking into the topic deeply in the future.
Also I learned many kinds of fallacies.
      Non-sequitur (I cannot pronounce "sequitur")
      Red herring
      Appeal to pity
      Bandwagon
      Ad hominem
      Sweeping generalization
      Reductive fallacy
      Hasty generalization
      Appeal to ignorance
      Appeal to authority
      Post hoc
      Either or
It spent a lot of time to list up... There are fallacies that we should not commit in the essay. In my childhood, I was a habitual offender of committing Red herring. When I wrote a composition, I wrote the straight introduction and body components at first, however, in the end, I wrote meaningless sentences that had no connection with the previous part. My teachers often gave warnings against Red herring.  Now, I am always careful about Red herring.
To avoid committing these fallacies, I think it is important for us to do peer reviewing whenever each of us complete writing paragraph.  I want to say effective comment to my peers, so I need to understand all of the fallacies now!!!!

Syllogism!!

I wrote about the class in May 26th.

First, I did not understand what is syllogisms at that time. I thought that the syllogism was a proper noun.
A If the death penalty deterred murder, countries that used it would have fewer murders.
B America uses the death penalty, but has many murders.
C Therefore, the death penalty does not deter murder.

I  assumed that syllogism was to confirm that the connection of each sentence is good or not. However, my peer told me that syllogism meant "A is B, B is C. Therefore A is C", so to speak, deduction!! I think that it makes the essay or thesis clear. Even now I feel a little confused about verifying the syllogism, but I would like to write the essay with being conscious of it. Not, "would like to try writing...",
Keep going, just doing!!!!!

Learning From Many Videos!

I watched ten videos about peer review. I learned that correcting grammar and spelling mistakes is not priority of peer review. I commented only about these mistakes to my peer's essays, so I have to change my way to comment. I would like to comment their essays in detail like ''why this sentence is not correct'', or ''why this point is good''.
I cannot verify whether my essay is clear, unity and logically or not by myself, so peer review is so important.
In the previous blog, I wrote that '' I cannot use grammarly!'',but  I could use it yesterday!! I think it is useful and it makes me find the point that is not correct academically.
I want to improve my essay skills.
- Do. Or do not. There is no try -

Everyday Essay Excellent!!!!!

Until Tuesday, I was confused because I was lost in writing the essay and searching some articles. Now, however, I got how to search articles, so I am now excited!!!!!!!!!
I read peer's clip of Evernote, and I am absorbed reading it. I thought the article would be useful for her essay. I am looking forward to reading her completed essay.
Similarly, I realized that Evernote is very good function of preserving some articles. Thanks, Dan!
Unfortunately, I have sick because of the extreme weather change in Tokyo and Gunma. (maybe) Thus, I will write comments about six videos in the next blogging, sorry...

Two videos and LBH...

Today, I read LBH 4a-4c to understand the draft. It is important to read over what you've already written, write freely like brainstorming, and start writing the part that you understand the best. Since I thought it was natural to start writing from the introduction of the essay, I was so surprised.
Also, I watched two videos. I learned that outline helps a thesis paper and we do not have to be complete it. We should keep writing so that we will be able to make better essay.  I will do my best!

Last class.....

I feel so tired and I am in poor health. In the last ARW class, I learned how to use Evernote and ICU library web site, but I could not understand all of them. Therefore, I applied the lecture how to use the website being held in the Osumer library. I want to master the skill of looking into the thesis source. Also, I registered Grammarly tool, but I cannot check my own sentences!!! OMG!!!
After today's class, I am going to search about how to use this tool.

Writing essay...

From the last class, I learned the citation. Citation plays many role, so I want to acquire how to use it perfectly. And first and last part of the paragraph should be writer's opinion and between them, some evidence and personal experience should be included.

I want to write about trans fats as my 1st essay. Do you know trans fats? As I wrote about it in the previous blog, trans fats are bad for health, and many people have strong attitudes not to take any trans fats in their bodies. However, trans fats are included into many processed food, so I think we cannot remove trans fats in the body. I also think Japanese people do not have to be careful about it so much considering their daily diets and other surroundings. I want to write about that.

I watched the video, ''Any useful tips? ''.  I learned there are two strategies of prewriting, clustering and freewriting. I think enumerating ideas and drawing general map about the topic is important and these things will be used at any point of the writing process.

We are all monkeys against racism

There is no difference. Human beings are all the same and we must not do discrimination of the color of skins. I have never understood why a few people want to categorize people depending on their colors.
We do not need more racism.

If you had an unlimited plane ticket for a month, what would you do with it?

I neglected writing blogs because I got Gogatsubyo. Oh my god--- I slept much time but I am always dull. I learned it is important for me not to stay up late even if it is a couple of days.

I would so happy if I had an unlimited plane ticket for a month. At first, I wanted to visit a lot of countries all over the world. However, I need one year to go all of them. Thus, I plan to European countries, especially Italy. My friend went there three years ago, and she told me how beautiful Italy was and their food was so delicious. I dreamed seeing the Mediterranean Sea, so her story provoked me to go to Italy. I will eat mamy pasta and pizza!!!!

Netiquette!!

Netiquette is a slang that mixes net and etiquette. It is needed when we communicate in the Internet and use web site or e-mail. For example, we should not use machine dependent characters or half-width characters and words that are used in limited area. All of these things make readers uncomfortable. I think we must be careful whether we use Japanese-English or not because there is audience in the world. When they read the words, they may be irritated.
And, in the case of e-mail, we should not use big capacity of file. It might cause trouble between the recipient and I.

''GoGatsuByo''

 First, What is "Gogatsu-Byo"???
A new employee and new students of the university are easy to fall this symptom. Mental condition that people cannot get used to be in the new environment is very related to it. Even if we have high motivation for new environment, some of us who cannot adopt the environment get it after the first week in May, you know, Golden Week. They get tired very much during GW, and lose mind that they want to go office or school.
To avoid this, we should refresh our mind by meeting our old friends or keeping regular life style in April. We also should not expect too much for our new environment. I think working off the stress is the best solution.

What are trans fats anyway, and why are they so bad?

In my opinion, to add some trans fat in processed food cannot be avoided. It is contained in frozen food. Frozen food is very useful when someone is too busy to cook. Therefore, a little amount of trans fat is OK, but we should avoid taking trans fat as much as we can. I was surprised that FDA Commissioner Margaret A. Hamburg stated that further reductions could save 7,000 lives each year. This sentence noticed me that trans fat is more dangerous than I had expected.
Trans fat is made by adding hydrogen to liquid oil, which turns it into a solid. It is cheap than animal fat like butter and lard. Artificial trans fats were invented in 1901 by the German chemist. But the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention revealed that trans fat increases the risk of heart disease, including angina, heart attacks and other potentially fatal problems. To use artificial trans fat in the restaurant or shop was banned and the action to avoid using it  in the food products is spread. I think these things are so good for our health. Diets included little trans fat make us healthier or keep body's conditions. Food companies should continue to try reducing trans fat.

Human beings are the only intelligent life in the universe?

From a long time before, human beings are believed to be the only intelligent life in the universe.
As a evidence, we can communicate by speaking and listening and can appear emotion. We all may understand this. However, human beings are the only outstanding creature in the world and there might be more animals that are intelligent such as apes. They live in a group. Then, they have to communicate each other. I think that they cannot live unless they understand each other. Therefore, there are more intelligent life in the universe. Recently, a study about animal intelligence soluve other animals. I am looking forward to seeing the study.

Reaction to the lecture from Dr. Paul Wadden

From the lecture, I appreciated that ICU is the most balanced university. We can learn academically and actively by discussing and asking during the class. And also, we do not have to decide major when we enter ICU. It is so nice!!
It is bad point for Japanese students that they tend to consider the university as leisure land. We should enjoy college life, however, in the point of studying, we should learn voluntary not just listening lecture but asking when we have a question.
We cannot change Japanese current higher educational system easily, but the system should be changed in that major course system. Since we have not studied specialized course such as psychology and linguistics, we may want to change our major in the process of college life when we got interested other course that is different from your ordinary major. I wish.....
I strongly felt that to enter the company used the OB or OG connection called "コネ入社" in Japanese should be banned because it prevents other great able people from getting their suitable jobs.
I enjoyed the lecture from Dr. Paul Wadden!!!

A friend in need is a friend indeed...

・You may have so many friends during the school life.
However, how many best, and true friends do you have??
For example, when you face the bad situation like losing thing that you very need and getting bad points on the test, you must be sad.
Then some friends may cheer you up or listen to your trouble.
I think they are friends indeed.
This proverb teaches us that we can realize the existence of friends when they help us to save from the adverse circumstances.
I want to make friends indeed and realize true friendship in my university life!!

What is the perfect meal

・It contains many kinds of nutritions like carbohydrates, protain, a vitamin, calcium and so on. Some nutrients in one food can attack some poison elements even if they contains in other foods. However, a nourishing food like Calorie mate is not the perfect meal.

・It is composed rice or bread or noodle, fish or meat, vegetables, fruits and other food products.

・It should suit people's conditions. For example, when you are sick, the meal should be soft and easily digestible food.

・It has wonderful smell and taste.

・It does not contain too much fat, salt and sugar .

・It has various color so that you have an  good appetite.

・The calories of the meal is not so high.

・I think the perfect meal close to us is a set lunch, Teisyoku called in Japanese. It is so nutritious that our body can stay healthy, however, we cannot make perfect meal easily.

・In lunch time,  I would like to eat a set lunch as much as I can.
